In the fall of 2015, the siege of predominantly Kurdish cities in southeastern Turkey began, carried out by units of the Turkish police and military. Curfews were imposed in strongholds of the Kurdish liberation movement, and hundreds of civilians lost their lives to sniper, artillery, and tank fire. In response to the brutal attacks, local civil defense units of the Kurdish population organized themselves. The trenches and barricades built by the often very young fighters became a symbol of a new phase in the struggle for democratic autonomy. Five colleagues from the leftist news portal Lower Class Magazine visited the conflict areas in January and February 2016: Diyarbakır-Sur, Şırnak, Nusaybin, Silopi, Cizre, and Yüksekova. Their reports are compiled in this volume.
