In 2012, all of Rotterdam was in shock. The art scene, politics, police, and Interpol were all taken aback. A gang of thieves took less than five minutes to steal seven million-dollar paintings during the anniversary exhibition at the Kunsthalle Rotterdam, including works by Picasso, Matisse, Gauguin, and Monet. The method was as brutal as it was simple: the canvases were cut out of their frames with carpet knives, rolled up, and swiftly carried out of the museum. Kristin Foltan has immortalized this spectacular heist in "Tolles Heft." She depicts the robbery, the thieves who initially had no idea of the precious loot they had obtained, and the absurd ending of the story. In a panic, the mother of one suspect burned the paintings in the oven at the start of the trial, fearing they could incriminate her son.
