How this book came to be: At that time, I lived with a group of friends in a magnificent old villa that had once been built by the richest brewer in the world. He would come every summer from the USA to the Taunus. Even the American President Theodore Roosevelt visited him there. But then Adolphus Busch, the wealthy brewer, passed away, and a few years later, so did Miss Lilly, his wife. Their 13 children remained in the USA, and so the villa Lilly fell into disrepair, first slowly, then increasingly faster. When we rented it in the 1970s, the old building was in a pitiful state.
