Jacques de Molay, the Grand Master of the world-renowned, esteemed, but also feared Order of the Templars, was horrified. His order was to be dissolved, the knights arrested, and the vast wealth of the French crown seized. Arrest warrants had already been issued and distributed to all governors and bishops in France. On Friday, October 13, 1307, the king's vassals were to arrest and imprison every Templar throughout the country in the early morning hours. The Grand Master believed it was no longer possible to save all the Templars. Therefore, he hurriedly assembled three mule caravans to secure the archives and gold. One caravan was destined for England, another was to go by sea to Portugal, and a third was to be taken to the Templar fortress in Ponferrada, Spain.
