Just as Kathrin quits her job at a television station, a tree nearly falls on her head during a walk in the woods. She is saved by the reserved forest ranger Jan, who lives a secluded life in the forest. Despite their differences, they grow closer until Kathrin has to confront the painful reality of Jan's dark past. When Kathrin's brother Hanno seeks her help, pursued by debt collectors whose criminal employers threaten the forest, things become quite dangerous. Jan's belief that Kathrin is involved in Hanno's dealings complicates matters even further, leaving her to wonder whom or what she should save first.
