Marquise von O
German, Dacia Palmerino, 2015Product details
The story of "The Marquise of O...." has arrived in the present. It is hard to believe how the Italian painter Andrea Grosso Ciponte, whose works have also been shown at the Biennale, transforms Heinrich von Kleist's highly complex psychological narrative "The Marquise of O...." into a graphic novel. Ciponte takes the provocative and artistic leap towards a reduced visualization. He focuses entirely on the figure of the Marquise, painting her exclusively naked, except for the few scenes in which she is subjected to violence. Dacia Palmerino's text adaptation is equally a showcase of allusive brevity; it follows a narrative thread, extracted from Kleist's intricate language, sturdy enough to connect and support Ciponte's magnificent visual ideas. The watercolor technique brings a certain distance to the work.
