"Remote Homeland Sudetenland" depicts the life story of two German families who had to leave their North Bohemian homeland in Czechoslovakia after the end of World War II. Both families ended up in the Soviet-occupied zone. The author, Reinhard F. F. Heller, a descendant of these displaced individuals, compiled his own memories of his parents and grandparents in a documentary. Accompanied by accounts from close companions who shared their journeys and sufferings, diary entries, letters, and photographs, a harrowing picture emerges of a time marked by complete disenfranchisement, humiliation, and expropriation, as well as the prolonged process of rediscovery in a foreign land. Two questions are repeatedly explored: How could it come to pass that three million Germans were expelled by their Czech compatriots? And: Who bears guilt in the ethnic conflict between Germans and Czechs? The author has dedicated the book to the memory of his ancestors. He also wishes to present it as a warning for the present and future, urging timely and decisive action against fanatical national self-aggrandizement and xenophobia.
