"For thieves, there are prisons; for artists, there are museums." This was the statement by Jean Tinguely (1925-1991) when he acquired a decommissioned factory in 1988 in La Verrerie, a location between Freiburg and Lausanne. Within four years, he set up his "total anti-museum" here with unbridled energy and relentless effort. He named the factory "Torpedo Institute" and transformed the 3,000 square meter industrial hall into his studio – it became a workshop, theater stage, artwork, and exhibition space all at once. In the vast, dark halls, Tinguely displayed not only his own machines and sculptures but also works by Saint Phalle, Aeppli, Luginbühl, Spoerri, Podestà, Vautier, and others. Tinguely's anti-museum is a place with unpredictable opening hours and unfathomable entry conditions. It is a space that constantly evolves and where its own rules apply.
