Black and white is not colorless. It is the medium of light, not a reduction, but a concentration on the essential, as Peter Stamm states in his essay "Never is the Night as Dark as in Childhood." Just as in Marcel Gähler's first artist book, Pencil on Paper, where he dealt with images of unspectacular, mostly nocturnal places, he also starts here with small-format black-and-white photographs that he copies in their original size.
