Among the new materials that have gained programmatic significance in 20th-century art, bones hold an important place. As a medium for image assemblages, sculptures, and installations, they have expanded the traditional canon of materials and made the transience of the body and the death of humans more vividly tangible. Especially in the art after 1945, the use of bones has horrifyingly updated the central themes of war, genocide, and mass extermination.
