In the 21st century, a large portion of the population will live in cities - this is the widely communicated credo. This statement is reinforced by an Urban Renaissance and a noticeable increase in investment from both private and public capital in urban development projects worldwide. Websites convey these planning initiatives to the public. The visualizations of the designs and the project descriptions found in these presentations promise modernization, attractiveness, and economic growth - in short: a better life. Through twelve examples from Europe, Africa, and Asia, these images and texts are critically examined: What do they tell us about future life in these cities and neighborhoods? Who will live, reside, and work in these cities, and in what manner? What lifestyles and living forms are being promoted?.
