When "The Freedom in Love" was published in France in 1967, 150 years after it was written, the book was enthusiastically received and considered a precursor to a sexual revolution. Fourier sharply criticizes the "civilization" of his time and develops an alternative social model, "Harmony," which is based on the end of monogamous marriage, the multiplication of love relationships of all kinds, and absolute equality of the sexes. Fourier, a man of the 18th century, also regards homosexuality, fetishism, and other practices deemed "perverse" as variations of passion; from the noblest feelings to the most absurd sensual obsessions, from sacred love to the most risqué fantasies, he sees everything as equally valid. As a visionary and utopian, he envisions an open society where new rules are no longer prohibitions.
