Product details

To this day, there is no thematic overview of the life’s work of Armand Schulthess (1901 - 1972). Armand Schulthess hung more than 1,000 labeled panels in the trees and shrubs of his 18,000 square meter chestnut forest in the Onsernone Valley in Ticino. For over twenty years, he transformed the forest into a philosophical garden that recorded and organized the knowledge of humanity in an encyclopedic manner. Between 1963 and 1972, Hans-Ulrich Schlumpf collected extensive material, mapped the entire garden, and photographed each individual object. After Armand Schulthess's unexpected death in 1972, the entire garden complex was destroyed by his heirs, his house was completely emptied, and all household items were burned. Among these were about seventy books he had created himself on sexuality. Some of these artistically valuable books were saved by Hans-Ulrich Schlumpf, who made the last film recordings during the dramatic house clearance. The planned publication documents the garden, presents the interior of the house, and for the first time provides a comprehensive insight into the self-made books on sexuality. Only this review and precise description make it possible to understand the obsessive universe of Armand Schulthess and to establish meaningful connections between the garden, the house, and the self-made books.
