Product details

In "ORIGINALE. Invitation Cards 2005-2013," the focus is on Thomas Müllenbach's series of works titled "Halboriginale," which he created from 2005 to 2013. The starting point for this series was the countless invitation cards for exhibitions and art events that the artist found daily in his mailbox—concrete evidence of the everyday life of the art world. Müllenbach translated this everyday experience, which already shapes his work, into his own images—in watercolor. From Dürer to van Gogh, from national to international artists, and from figurative subjects to abstract compositions, the works play with recognizability. Müllenbach's "Halboriginale" are neither plagiarism nor copies, but rather distinctive interpretations or, in the artist's words, "hand made appropriation." The reference to appropriation art is significant, as it greatly influences contemporary artistic creation and thus the lived everyday life of the art world, where creators and recipients meet. Since the 1970s, Thomas Müllenbach has shaped both Swiss art creation and the local cultural landscape. As a professor at the Zurich University of the Arts, he has made significant contributions to current art discourse for many years. In 1985, Müllenbach played a key role in founding the Kunsthalle Zurich, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year—among other events, with Müllenbach's acclaimed solo exhibition "T.F.T.," which dedicates an entire room to the "Halboriginale." Each book cover is uniquely designed by Thomas Müllenbach, making it a one-of-a-kind piece.
