Product details
Suzanne Perrottet (1889-1983), who grew up in Geneva, received her training in rhythmics from Émile Jaques-Dalcroze and was a teacher in Hellerau, among others, of Mary Wigman. In 1912, she met the dancer, choreographer, and dance theorist Rudolf von Laban and moved with him to the artists' colony on Monte Verità near Ascona, and later to Zurich, where she performed at Dada evenings. In the summer of 1913 on Monte Verità, she experienced a significant turning point. Together with Laban, Wigman, and others, she discovered the importance and expressiveness of natural movement and gesture, sounds, and words. Modern expressive dance was born. The aim was to make working with natural movements beneficial for all people - the goal was the liberation of body and mind. In 1920, Suzanne Perrottet founded her own school in Zurich, teaching dancers, actors, children, and adults, including those with physical and mental challenges, and continued her intensive research. Since there was no usable visual material, she began cutting out images of movements, gestures, and facial expressions from magazines. Organized by keywords, she created her own collection. Over more than sixty years, this resulted in an archive of more than 10,000 images. She worked until she was 89 years old. After her death, the banana boxes filled with newspaper clippings were forgotten. This book provides insight into this unique collection - a visual archive of movement.
