Product details

"The Rendering Eye" showcases screenshots of urban America as depicted in the 3D representation of Apple Maps. The images feature streets, buildings, and industrial plants devoid of people, creating an almost post-apocalyptic atmosphere. Cars and ships appear as ephemeral shadows, buildings transform into sculptures, containers melt, machines deform, and roads decay. The ghostly world of Apple Maps is governed by remarkably mimetic algorithms that adapt to the contours of reality but are ultimately overwhelmed by it. Originally developed for target-seeking missiles, this software has been declassified for several years. It now produces images reminiscent of the dystopian metropolises in Blade Runner, the expressionist sea of houses in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, the futuristic structures of SimCity, and Camille Pissarro's light-drenched boulevards. The city views captured by Regula Bochsler for this book are abstract, machine-generated, and cold, yet they can also be exuberant and poetically delicate in color. Their mistakes—blurred lines, distortions, and mirror effects—give them a quality that seems man-made, contributing to their obscure painterly beauty. Historian and publicist Regula Bochsler, along with historian and photographer Philipp Sarasin, reflect on the photo- and media-scientific implications of these algorithmically generated city views, which represent our New World in a highly advanced technical manner. Accompanying the virtual fly-over expedition are three texts: Regula Bochsler discusses the origins of classical aerial photography, theorist Bernd Stiegler provides photographic-historical context for the images, and MIT Technology Review editor Tom Simonite explores the military origins of Apple technology.
