Product details

The stories in this book were written with passion. The heart belonged to Laurette Schilling. She lived from 1837 to 1903, was the daughter of a famous zoologist, a landowner, an emancipated fighter, and the mistress of the island of Öhe. The Öhe, located between Hiddensee and Rügen, has been in her family for 800 years and remains so to this day. However, this idyllic 75-hectare treasure island arouses desires and envy. Thus, the single Laurette resolutely takes up the fight against landowners and gendarmes, against fishermen and lawyers. She conducts her battle with a masculine spirit, with courage and tenacity, using tricks and firearms. The struggle for her rights lands her in prison, in an asylum, and in disrepute. Yet, in a patriarchal world, she has a choice. After her death, Laurette Schilling's fate inspired poets like Hans Fallada and Fedor Sommer. In this book, published by her great-grandnephew Mathias Schilling, who now oversees the affairs of the treasure island, she finally speaks for herself. Laurette's writings reveal an independent and daring woman who did not fit into any mold, was far ahead of her time, and wrote captivatingly.
