Klara Thaler Stuefer is the last midwife for home births in the Sarntal Valley. As the daughter of a large farming family, she confidently decided to take a different path than many young women: without support, she completed middle school and became a midwife. Klara modestly recounts her training in Padua in the early 1950s and her austere daily life, characterized by hard work at all hours of the day and night. The joyful, but also the painful moments she experienced as a midwife allow her to look back with reverence on a tumultuous life. Klara's stories are complemented by the accounts of five Sarner women who describe their experiences of pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period in a male-dominated society.
