Finally pregnant, finally having taken precautions with the trusted gynecologist. But who actually benefits from the monitored belly? The currently prevalent model of medical prenatal care is rarely critically questioned. This is despite the fact that problematic pregnancies, violent interventions in the birth process, and interventions up to cesarean sections have been increasing for years, with a rising trend. The fear of uncertain outcomes turns pregnant women into lucrative patients. Risks defined by doctors often mean the end of self-determination. The joyful hope gives way to sudden doubt, which calls for even more control. Where will this development lead - and how can we positively influence it? Medical anthropologist Doris Moser examines this issue using the Austrian Mother-Child Pass, the German Mother Pass, and the situation in Switzerland.
