Product details

Before World War II, over 50,000 Jews lived in Thessaloniki. More than 46,000 of them were deported to the Nazis' extermination camps, and about 96% of them were murdered there. This book tells the stories of some of the few who were saved. Their stories are the exception, as the rule was death. Through testimonies and documents, we trace the life paths of people who shared common experiences—whether in the mountains, where they fought as partisans, or in the camps. We follow them further into the early years afterward, when these paths were still somewhat shared or diverged, as some returned to their hometown while others chose emigration. Valerie, Beniko, and Moise—some of the protagonists of the book—are not mere figures in a historical text; their fates are brought to life through the narrative.
