Jerusalem, Cairo, and Alexandria, three cities in a state of war, are the settings for the three novels The Club, Ariagni, and The Bat, which are among the most important works of modern Greek literature of the 20th century. The timeframe of the narrative spans 23 months, from June 1942 to May 1944, during which the revolt of the Greek exile forces in Egypt and Palestine, who sought to establish a government of national unity at the end of World War II and revolted against the Greek and English royalist military leadership, ultimately failed. With his main work, written as a work in progress, Tsirkas aimed to defend the historical failure of the April 1944 revolt, about which "the free world has no reason to be proud, and which historians are eager to cover up" (René Etiemble). At the center of the trilogy is Manos Simonidis, a Greek.
