Product details

Each of us is well acquainted with the now globally widespread Gregorian calendar, which was developed through the reform of the Julian calendar. Both calendar systems are purely solar calendars, where the phases of the moon play no role in the counting of the years. However, before the introduction of pure solar calendars, the Romans, Greeks, Gauls, and Germans in Europe used bound lunar or lunisolar calendars, where the moon was the primary "year counter." In addition to the well-documented Roman and Greek lunisolar calendars, the Gallic-Roman lunisolar calendar has been largely reconstructed from the fragments of Coligny and Villards d'Héria. This book now attempts to explore the characteristics of the bound lunar calendar of the Germans based on ancient, medieval, and early modern literary sources.
