Everyone receives the gift of their childhood, if one can indeed call it a gift. A childhood "in St. Pauli" during the post-war period is something special, particularly dirty, hungry, bourgeois, and beyond all usual middle-class moral standards. From 1940 to 1962: from the black market at the corner of Reeperbahn and Talstrasse, through the rite of passage of running through Herbertstrasse after school, to Aunt Hermine, St. Pauli's first trendy bar on Hafenstrasse. The fathers are missing. And those who reappear are war-damaged, especially in the head. It is the mothers who organize the fight for survival. The sons are focused on cinema, jazz, and the curiosity about sexuality in a world of bourgeois citizens, prostitutes, pimps, and sailors. Kalle describes his life in this environment very precisely; he talks about his successes and failures and about his first great love.
