From afar, the powerful Gothic brick churches herald the former wealth of the old Hanseatic city of Wismar. However, it is only when standing directly in front of St. Mary, St. Nicholas, or St. George that one truly feels their dimensions and the grandeur of medieval architecture. Hanjo Volster has succeeded in capturing these impressions with his photographs. Not only are the historical landmarks of the protected old town presented in this portrait, but also the modern aspects of the port city. The gaze wanders from the magnificent secular buildings—such as the "Old Sweden" from 1380 or the neoclassical town hall—over the Old Harbor towards modern structures like the new shipbuilding hall or the "Harbor Center." Just as the festivals, markets, and cozy street cafés are included, the surrounding area of Wismar has also been captured in this photographic journey.
