Russia has a difficult history behind it, and the immense size of this country means that its borders are not only geographically but also politically and culturally very diverse and problematic. The Russian photographer Maria Gruzdeva wanted to thoroughly explore the Russian border with this project, rather than just traveling through it. She engaged deeply with this borderland, resulting in a journey through time, history, memory, and space that began in 2011 and ended in 2015. In addition to her photographic work, she kept an illustrated diary, which became increasingly important over time and thus turned into a substantial part of her work. In this diary, she not only recorded conversations with the local people but also her memories, as well as her own experiences and feelings.
