The figurative coffins of the Ga have been recognized worldwide as works of art since the exhibition "Les Magiciens de la terre" in Paris in 1989. Their invention is generally attributed to the coffin maker Kane Kwei (1925-1992) from Teshie. In her book, Regula Tschumi questions the established interpretations of the figurative coffins in the art world. She also explores the figurative palanquins, which are little known in Western art circles and were previously considered precursors to the figurative coffins. Regula Tschumi's work is based on several years of field research conducted in multiple stages in the Greater Accra region from 2002 to 2012. To learn more about the palanquins and coffins, she studied the culture of the Ga, their religion, their artistic expressions, their history, and their funerals. Thus, palanquins and coffins are viewed in the context of the life world from which they originate.
