Product details

This book is based on the long-standing work of a Gestalt therapist and trainer in Latin America. It presents the results of a project on the theme of "Traumatic Experiences and Personal Resources in Bolivia," conducted in collaboration with Bolivian psychologists. Through interviews and case studies, it vividly illustrates the presence of collective traumatization and clarifies the connections between extreme poverty, the frequency of traumatic experiences, psychological distress, available resources, and experienced post-traumatic growth. The moving and impressive stories from the lives of young Bolivians reveal their traumatic, extraordinarily painful, and anxiety-inducing experiences, as well as their unique sources of strength. The situation shaped by poverty, violence, and insecurity in a so-called "third-world country" leads to hidden suffering and specific psychosocial symptoms. On the other hand, European notions of what is "normal," "healthy," or "sick" need to be questioned and relativized. The author presents Gestalt therapeutic work in self-experience groups as a realistic alternative and treatment model. An extensive appendix provides questionnaires and tables.
