Volunteering in palliative care fulfills important, differentiated tasks and functions within the framework of health and social care structures. The challenge for volunteer work in palliative care lies in positioning itself within the changing organizational structures and reflecting on these with a view to a hospice-palliative care culture. Susanne Fleckinger understands palliative care as a space where volunteer and professional work are complementarily present, from which new, evidence-based care structures can be developed for the dying and their families, taking into account demographic and epidemiological changes as well as societal transformations.
