Product details

The Nazi judges referred to Emden as an "extraordinarily dangerous anti-state nest" after the mass arrests and the subsequent trials in Berlin and Hamm. In fact, the Emden communists managed to establish a Europe-wide network of connections that also influenced the German Reich at that time. The results of the harshest interrogations by the Gestapo only revealed the tip of the iceberg. This book addresses the available knowledge about the actions of the Emden comrades up until the end of the war in 1945. It is often assumed that the resistance of the KPD was limited to maintaining contact among comrades and had little impact. While this is certainly not entirely incorrect, this perspective overlooks the significant effect that consistent anti-fascist activities abroad had. Through the diverse connections in European countries, which were soon occupied by the Wehrmacht, communists presented a different image of German people. As the example of the Netherlands before and after the war shows, the resistance was indeed recognized and accepted. Ultimately, the comrades contributed to the military defeat of the Nazis on an international basis by relaying important information. Even within the German Reich, their efforts were by no means as ineffective as portrayed by bourgeois sources. Certainly, the communists did not alone bring down the Hitler dictatorship—but neither did anyone else.
