Boys on a soccer field. What is being played here is not soccer, and the field is in Auschwitz. Only the SS have fun in this game: those who touch the crossbar with their heads are allowed to live a little longer. Those who are too small are big enough to die immediately. The survivors, children aged 13 and 14, are soon sent to the "Gypsy camp" in Birkenau, named after those who were held captive here until their murder in the summer of 1944. What do Jewish children do when they know they will be killed the next day? They assess the hopelessness. They talk to each other. They pray the Kaddish, the Jewish prayer for the dead, for hours. The Kapos, helpers of the executioners and themselves Jews, allow it. One of the imprisoned escapes through a skylight, whether caught or not. One starts to sing, and different voices join in.
