This book brings together twenty poems that Marcel Reich-Ranicki, who has been publishing the Frankfurt Anthology since 1974, appreciates, admires, and not infrequently loves. In any case, all of these poems have particularly stood out to him throughout his lifelong engagement with German literature; indeed, he cannot forget them. They come from all eras of our poetry. The selection begins with Walther von der Vogelweide, who lived around eight hundred years ago, and extends to contemporary authors such as Erich Fried and Günter Kunert. Striving to showcase and make aware the richness and range of German poetry, Reich-Ranicki has not shied away from placing poems of very different types, significance, and quality side by side, alongside those that undoubtedly belong to the most beautiful in our language.
