The ATB is the most traditional series of editions in German medieval studies. Founded in 1881 by Hermann Paul, it has been overseen by leading experts such as Georg Baesecke, Hugo Kuhn, and Burghart Wachinger. Since 2001, the responsibility has been in the hands of Christian Kiening. The now approximately 120 volumes exemplify the connection between manuscript fidelity and readability, scholarly work on the text, and a focus on academic teaching. They include recognized, sometimes annotated editions of 'classical' authors from around 1200, as well as significant critical editions (Notker the German) and ambitious new editions (Eckenlied, Heinrich von dem Türlin).
