The Ulm School of Design - known as hfg - is one of the iconic buildings of West Germany's awakening in the 1950s. Initiated by Otl Aicher and Inge Aicher-Scholl, the sister of Hans and Sophie Scholl, a new university was established on the grounds of the old fortress Oberer Kuhberg, which was long considered the most internationally significant design school after the Bauhaus. The planning and construction were overseen by the artist and architect Max Bill, who created a striking ensemble with great precision and expressiveness in a visionary spirit and with meticulous attention to detail. Despite its architectural and educational significance, the buildings of hfg have always remained somewhat in the shadow of public perception, partly due to the political and personal intrigues that accompanied its later history.
