The challenge of writing a book on VLSI design and VLSI systems lies in the vast diversity of the subject. If one aims to provide a more or less comprehensive overview of this field, it tends to turn into a commented bibliography unless one writes a multi-volume work. A detailed discussion on a specific topic within VLSI design, such as technological foundations, specification, analysis, or synthesis of highly integrated circuits, or testing and verification, is substantial enough for a standalone book. Nevertheless, the goal of this book is to provide an introduction to the field of VLSI design and VLSI systems. To achieve this goal, we have chosen a middle ground. For almost all individual topics, we address questions in detail that have an exemplary character.
