The book outlines the historical precursors of the field, particularly since the "Science of Judaism" in the early 19th century, and presents the current focal points of Jewish Studies and Jewish Studies programs. The main sections are dedicated to the four periods of Jewish history and culture: the time of the Second Temple (approximately 400 BCE – 70 CE), the rabbinic period up to around the year 1000 with centers in Palestine and Babylonia, the Middle Ages with a focus on Europe, and – to a lesser extent – the modern era. Each period begins with an outline of the historical events and turning points, followed by a presentation of the main intellectual-religious movements and their literature. Current key questions and unresolved issues in research are particularly emphasized.
