When he was executed by firing squad on November 9, 1848, all of Germany mourned: Robert Blum was an idol, a man who dedicated his life to the fight for freedom and who became a German myth as a victim of the revolutionary struggles. Based on numerous newly uncovered sources, Ralf Zerback tells his life story. He recounts the poverty and hardship of Blum's youth in Cologne, the tumultuous rise of the unemployed brass founder to faction leader in the first German parliament, his involvement in the revolution, his arrest as a barricade fighter, his execution, and his lasting impact. He depicts the gifted speaker Blum, the skilled organizer and manager, the enthusiast for Schiller and friend of Poland, the favorite of women, and the family man. Blum's biography leads into a dynamic and moving era, both contemplative and combative, the time of the Vormärz and the revolution of 1848, when the struggle for unity, justice, and freedom took place. It is the prehistory and early history of our democracy.
