Adorno's "Introduction to Sociology" is the last lecture he delivered and the only one for which the audio recordings are completely preserved. As a summary of his decades-long sociological work, the lecture from 1968 also serves as an introduction to critical social theory, in the development of which Adorno played a crucial role. This sociology lecture exemplifies what Critical Theory once stood for: the demand for a dialectical interpenetration and development of philosophical theory and empirical scientific practice, which Max Horkheimer programmatically raised for the work at the Institute for Social Research in the early 1930s. Adorno remained committed to this principle throughout all his works, which constitutes its inner connection and is its unbroken living impulse.
