Katrin Burghardt presents the state of the art in referral management in German acute hospitals and demonstrates how and to what extent hospitals are already implementing targeted measures in referral management. She examines the potential future fields of application and perspectives that hospitals see in managing their referral relationships. The author highlights that patients, due to increasing patient sovereignty, will gain significant importance as customers, and hospitals will need to adapt to the role of an active patient in the future.
