The V160 series was designed as a medium-powered diesel locomotive for light service on main lines. After ten prototypes were built between 1960 and 1963, a family of diesel locomotives gradually developed, with power ratings between 1,900 and 2,700 horsepower. Thanks to their push-pull and multiple traction capabilities, these locomotives were versatile in both passenger and freight transport, operating not only on electrified routes. Volume 1 provides a comprehensive overview of the technical development of the V160 prototypes and their evolution into series locomotives. Shortly after the commissioning of the V160 series, further variants of the V160 family emerged. Volume 2 of this three-volume work presents the series 215/225, V162/217, and V169/219 in detail, with a particular focus on the reasons behind their development.
