On September 1, 2018, it will have been 150 years since the first train reached Remscheid in the Bergisches Land from what is now Wuppertal. The railway rapidly increased Remscheid's significance - after Berlin, the city ranked second in exports through the Hamburg port, earning it the nickname "The Seaport on the Mountain." Local industries eagerly utilized the railway, leading to the creation of numerous branch lines, some of which still contribute to freight traffic today. With the construction of the famous Müngstener Bridge in 1897, Remscheid gained a direct connection to the Rhine. It was the first steel structure built in free cantilever and remains the highest railway bridge in Germany. The former through station in Lennep soon became a significant transport hub with the construction of new lines to Wipperfürth, further to Marienheide, Opladen, and into the Wupper Valley towards Radevormwald.
