Between 1871 and 1994, Paragraph 175 criminalized sexual acts between men. Society did its part to condemn same-sex relationships of any kind as disgraceful, immoral, or sick. Nevertheless, Berlin developed into a melting pot and a place of longing for homosexual life: scandalized and scientifically researched in the Wilhelmine Empire, debauched and extravagant during the Weimar Republic, relentlessly persecuted under National Socialism, silenced in the eastern part of the divided city, and loudly activist in walled West Berlin. Through literary and journalistic texts from novels, magazines, and guides, as well as selected photographic documents, the anthology traces the tumultuous history of "the other" Berlin.
