Thesis from 2010 in the field of History - Miscellaneous, grade: 2.7, Bavarian Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, language: German.

Abstract: The election of Rudolf of Habsburg as Holy Roman Emperor by the electors was certainly surprising for many of his contemporaries. This paper will address how Rudolf of Habsburg was "unanimously" elected as the new king. The first part of the paper deals with the background of Rudolf of Habsburg's election. It briefly introduces the other candidates who vied for the Holy Roman throne. Of interest here is that they primarily sought the Roman-German crown from the Pope rather than from the relevant electoral princes. Furthermore, the role of Gregory X will also be discussed. The second part will then address the elections that preceded the election.
