Product details
As a kind of response to the famous book about Germany by Madame de Staël, Heinrich Heine conceived a three-part project on German literature, German philosophy, and German mythology and folklore. This third part was published independently in Germany under the title "Elemental Spirits." In this work, Heine attempts to introduce interested French readers to German legends and ghost stories, featuring elves, nymphs, dwarfs, and devils, and ultimately marble maidens and Venus herself: the book concludes with Heine's version of the Tannhäuser legend.
