The Nazi camps represented a brutal counter-world, but even here there were rules and structures of civil societies. The Nazi concentration camps were social spaces. The coexistence of the inmates on one side and the SS personnel on the other was rooted in social forms of civil societies. The contributions highlight the social and cultural practices of these actors as well as the social structures and developments of the camp societies, which were continuously subjected to violent changes. They trace the origins of the social forms prevailing in the camps back to civilian life and inquire about their specific transformations within the concentration camp societies.
