Warfare, particularly that of World War I, which marked its 100th anniversary in 2014, has profoundly shaped the fate and collective memory of the people in the Upper Rhine region. The military historian from Freiburg, Karlheinz Deisenroth, meticulously and vividly recounts the combat events using war diaries, situation reports, historical photographs, and fortification relics such as the remnants of positions and trenches that still stretch across the Vosges mountains today.
