The case made headlines in 2016: For a conference at TU Berlin on the effects of SED ideology on human-animal relationships in the GDR, the young doctoral candidate Christiane Schulte submitted a paper that was presented and later even published in a prestigious academic journal. It was only later revealed that Christiane Schulte was as fictitious as her essay on the East German shepherd dog as a contribution to the violent history of the century of extremes. The partly absurd theses went unnoticed, just like the missing or fabricated sources. A science hoax like this is more than just a mere joke: ideally, it serves as a good satire that aims to entertain while enlightening - and it is particularly successful when a committee or editorial board fails to see through an obvious prank.
