Product details

Johann Andreas Georg Friedrich Rebmann (1768 - 1824), a German jurist and publicist during the time of the French Revolution, published many of his texts anonymously, occasionally under a pseudonym. As a staunch supporter of the Enlightenment and a proponent of the ideas that were at the forefront of the French Revolution, his literary work was characterized by the contrast between enlightenment and backward living conditions. In his satirical works, he critically addresses social distinctions, despotism, religious superstition, and fanaticism. However, he was not a revolutionary; rather, he advocated for reconciliation with the German princes and for politics and reforms guided by reason from above. In the present work, he takes up the well-known theme of the Schildbürgerstreiche, enriches it with commentary on the situation of the time, and thus creates a satire.
