Empirical police research can be defined as any social science engagement with the topic of police that, based on the methodology and methods of empirical social research, collects, analyzes, and/or interprets data in a theoretically inspired and methodologically controlled manner. This volume documents the contributions from a conference held in the fall of 1999 at the University of Applied Sciences for Police in Saxony, Rothenburg. It includes current contributions from empirical police research on topics such as police culture, constructions of crime, police and the public, as well as innovative projects. A particular strength of this volume lies in the integration of different interdisciplinary perspectives and various methodological approaches, making it of interest not only to social scientists and psychologists but also to police practitioners.
