Alopecia, or circular hair loss, is an ancient condition and remains a dermatological problem to this day. Hair falls out in small, round patches in clumps, relentlessly, until complete baldness is reached. The condition occurs regardless of age and gender. In theory, anyone at any age, including children, can be affected. This strange form of hair loss was already known in antiquity. The Greek physician Hippocrates (around 400 BC), the most famous doctor of his time, referred to the cruelly progressive hair loss as "fox mange" = alopecia (from Greek "alopex," meaning fox). However, even he, the keen observer and analyst, could not find an explanation or treatment for fox mange. This has remained the case through the centuries up to the present day. Even today, medical professionals are puzzled by the causes and nature of alopecia.
