The early history of Bavaria, which was considered almost settled two decades ago, raises more questions than ever in light of recent research. To discuss these from an interdisciplinary perspective, representatives from archaeology, history, and linguistics met in Benediktbeuern in March 2010. The critical examination of the sources, combined with newly gained methodological insights, has shaken some older certainties but also revealed new, sometimes surprising perspectives. The contributions in this volume summarize the current state of research. Not only are numerous new approaches presented, but various competing and sometimes even contradictory viewpoints are also represented. The volume is published by the Institute for Bavarian History at LMU Munich and the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation.
